I am a freelance journalist and MA Journalism student at the University of Glamorgan. This project is both a journalistic investigation that I intend to pitch for commissioning and an academic research project that will form part of my masters studies.
The project is an investigation into ‘orphanage tourism’ in Cambodia. As Cambodia edges its way into the mainstream of tourism, volunteering is becoming ever more popular. This investigation will look at the effects this is having on the local economy and the people involved.
The academic research
Social media is now part of life. The internet has transformed the way people interact – and offers journalists exciting new ways to gather and share news. This is an exploration of the internet as a tool for investigative journalism across international borders. I hope to build on and improve internet newsgathering practices whilst giving valuable insight into the norms, customs and values of internet cultures.
